It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.
But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.
There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.

Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."

A Good Book

Speaking of Summer afternoons ..
I love to grab a cold soda from the fridge and maybe some salty chips or crackers and loll on the sofa and read a good book.

My mom started taking me to the Library when I was very young, those days I would end up coloring color books at the table for small people while Mom found books that she liked.

Years later, we both were in the Library together, looking for a book we liked, sometimes, often, I was reading books that my mom had read , all those years before.
We are a family of book readers .. my mom and her sisters, myself and my daughter, my son reads but he is also a writer, not of books, but everything else.
And now he has a small son who is getting a book for his Birthday.. and so we will keep the tradition going .

I just went through Amazon, after doing my baby boy birthday shopping and found a few Freebies on Kindle that I grabbed.
It is hot in here, even with the a/c . . the sun is shining on this room, on this chair, on this person.

So I will take my Kindle, a cold soda and go down to the living room where I will loll on a big sofa with the a/c blasting and I will read a summer book.

Teach your children to love reading.
It is one of the best gifts you can give.

What are you reading now ?

  1. I just started the Gabrial Allon series by Daniel Silva and I am hooked. Spy thrillers. Neat characters. Good reads.

  3. Also for something very Miss Marple-ish .. read any of or all of the Aunt Dimity books. I have all that have been written so far , thanks mostly to my sister in law who buys them, reads them, gives them to me .

  4. I hope you will be receiving a nice surprise (though not such a surprise now!) in the next 10 days or so!

I have loved reading since whenever I can remember, sometimes going to the library on Saturday morning, and spending the whole day just reading, reading, reading...

  5. Everywhere we lived, I would go to the library with my husband and check it out.
Portland Oregon has a wonderful library in a large old building, sort of an historic building I think.
    I love Library atmospheres :)

  6. I went back and read all the posts you wrote that I had missed. You certainly had a difficult time. I am so sorry about the loss of your mom. Then you had these awful friends that were not friends – that will bring them bad karma. The flood from your laundry was another hassle. I hope you can have some calmer days. About going back to Buenos Aires – I hope you do. I don’t know about staying there, though. When one leaves one place it is difficult to go back, it is never the same as the places have changed while we were away. I know that I always miss my hometown of Paris, but when I go back, it has also changed, there are loads of tourists everywhere, and it is different – I don’t think I could live there again; maybe in Nice as it is so lovely.

It is good that you have your sweet cats. I think that without cats life would be empty. My husband is here, but frankly I can’t speak to him much – I mean a conversation. His Alzheimer is getting worse and he understand little of what I say, then makes me repeat and repeat and still cannot understand that much. I told him it was Father’s Day but he could not remember that we have two daughters. I try not to get frustrated but it is not easy. I cannot leave him alone. He is so slow and gets up so late that I don’t have much time to clear out our accumulation for our move to Nashville. I’d be surprised if we can move before the end of the year. We do have a huge amount of books – in every single room – I mean thousands and thousands, truly. I usually have 4 to 5 books by my bed as I can only read at night after he is in bed. Right now I just finished Remise de Peine by Patrick Modiano, in French. The others are: New Order, A De-cluttering Handbook for Creative Folks, Paris Stories by Mavis Gallant, Istanbul Noir short stories edited by Mustafa Ziyalan, Living without Regret by Arnaud Maitland (Tibetan Buddhism), and Fools Crow, wisdom and power from the Great Sioux Holy Man. So it’s quite a variety.

  7. Thank you Vagabond. My only consolation regarding my Mom is that when she was still awake and aware, I said I love you , I was holding her hand and she squeezed my hand. I said Do you love me, and she nodded and mouthed the words .. she had a tube down her throat. It is the last thing that we got to say to each other so I hold it close and remember ..

About moving .. having moved from NY to BA back to NY and then alone from NY to Florida, I am a pro.
My husband was very Buddhist in thought and actions and he loved giving things away and getting rid of clutter. So I learned from him .. it is hard for me to give some things away but there is enough Stuff that I can let go of .. Things are much more neat around here than they used to be :)

  8. I used to love the library. I remember when I got my first library card. My vision isn't so great now, but I listen to audible books. They're great. Not quite the same as reading a book yourself, but I'm very happy to have the option.
