It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.
But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.
There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.
Alan Cohen

Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."

Mourning

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,

Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;

Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

WH Auden, poet (1907 - 1973)

  1. That is one of my favorites. It's read in the film, 4 weddings and a funeral.
    The sun will come out for you.

  2. A beautiful but terribly sad poem. It certainly feels that way when the loss is new. Hugs to you and all who loved him.

  4. Auden's poem hits the perfect note of how gutting loss is, but one line is wrong: Love WILL last forever. Please trust me on this. Every day you will see a part of yourself that is as good as it is because of being loved. And every day you will feel grateful in ways big and small for the love that was given to you. It will always be there for you and when you feel it is far away, sit767 and be very still and feel it wash over you. Take your time coming back, but do come back. xo

  6. Dearest Candice .. know that you are thought of and prayers asking for you to find some comfort in your memories and the love that will continue in your heart are going out for you and your family. Your beloved will continue to walk by your side with PUP .. know this.. their physical bodies are at rest but their spirit looks over you each and every moment of every day.
    Hugs and blessings from across the miles.. xo C. (HHL)

  8. My God. Dearest Candice, with tears in my eyes, I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your beloved husband. Please know I hold you close in my heart right now (even closer than normal if that is possible) and have just said prayers for you and your family while lighting a favorite candle. You have been and always will be very dear to me for so many reasons. My heart is truly broken for you. With much love, in hopes it brings you comfort, your Colette
